Five Tips to Jump Starting Your NBA Fantasy Basketball Team

NBA fantasy basketball team owners often get discouraged when their teams aren’t doing so well at this point in the season.  They don’t realize that now is the perfect time to rekindle the flames and jump start their team through the waiver and making trades.

Here are some quick tips on how to improve your struggling roster, or maintain your hot streak:

  1. Be smart about which players to be patient with and which players to give up on.  For example, Charlotte Bobcats point guard, Raymond Felton, is notorious for starting the season off slow before picking things up and finishing with a bang.  Conversely, Jason Richardson is scheduled for knee surgery and also recently broke his arm.  There is a small chance he might come back and play like he did last season, but that slight chance might not be worth the roster spot.

  2. Be smart about trades.  If you’re in a rotisserie league, make sure you’re not giving up two to three potential fantasy points in numerous STAT CATs (statistical categories) in order to potentially move up one point in another STAT CAT.

  3. If your rotisserie fantasy basketball league has a limit to the amount of games that can be used, make sure to closely monitor those games.

Ideally, you want to spread your games among all the roster spots to ensure that you get them all used.  At the same time, you don’t want to use them up so quickly that you run out of games early, because that most likely means you’re filling them with lesser valued players on your roster.

  4. Monitor player injuries and trade reports.  Sometimes it’s not possible to pull the fantasy gems off waivers, because others seem to always beat you to it.  It’s often necessary to be able to anticipate which players will step it up.  For example, when a player such as Yao Ming goes down to injury, you can bet that Dikembe Mutombo will get more minutes and will accumulate more rebounds and Juwan Howard will get more touches to help him score more points.

  5. Don’t give up if you’ve fallen behind!  Ask yourself why you’ve fallen behind.  Chances are your team has been hit with several key injuries.  You would be amazed at how quickly a fantasy basketball team can recover when its team gets healthy again.
