Fantasy Basketball New Year's Resolution

Missing games been the story for December, from Carmelo Anthony and JR Smith missing a combined 25 games for brawling, countless injuries to star players like Marcus Camby and Paul Pierce, and Allen Iverson missing games because of a trade.  It's been a frustrating month for most managers, but for those who've kept their eye on things, the waiver wire has been a gold mine.  Under-the-radar players have stepped up big while star teammates have been out, like Al Jefferson and Earl Boykins.

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. Now, as is the tradition, it's time for some suggestions for your fantasy basketball resolutions.

  1. If you haven't already been active in your league waiver wire, you might think to make that a resolution.  There have been an unusually high amount of injuries to star players this season, which has really opened the doors for young, under-the-radar prospects, like Dorell Wright, to make an impact.  If you're not playing the waiver wire as much as you ought to this season, you might find yourself missing a bid for your league title.

  2. Monitor your games.  For those in rotisserie leagues, check to see if you have a limited amount of games to use.  If you're in a Yahoo Public League, your limit is 82 games per position.  Remember, you don't want to use all your games up in one position, like utility, and not spread them out to your other positions. Otherwise, you'll have a tougher time of getting them all used.  If you're way ahead in games at this point, you might want to be more selective about which players you play.  Conversely, you do want to make sure you get all your games in, so if you're way behind, start shuffling players into the rotation.

  3. Make some deals. Now's the time to start assessing what you really need to win your league.  Keep in mind that if you're so behind in a particular statistic that it's not a very realistic goal to try and catch up, you might decide not to worry about it.  Be smart.  Don't trade two or three points in other STAT CATs just to make up one point in a STAT CAT you're struggling in.  It takes some number crunching and some additional observation of the STAT CATs, but it might mean the difference between first place and second or worse.

  4. Be patient with your injured stars.  Everyone's dealing with injuries.  It's obvious that you won't want to drop players like Paul Pierce at this point just because he's hurt for a little while.  You know he'll be back.  But, don't give up on players like J.R. Smith, Josh Smith, or Brad Miller, just because they're hurt, are missing games from suspension, or are trying to recover from injury on the court. It's a long season and you could get a big boost from them later.

  5. Persistence is key.  Losing interest in your team for a month can really hurt your chances of winning.  Even if you're near the bottom, it's not too late to make a push toward the top. We're not even at the half-way point of the season yet, so keep the faith!

Taking advantage

Have I expressed my love here for Earl Boykins before?  He just recently ended a two-week-straight streak of 20-point games.  6 games!  And just as it was starting I was able to nab him on 3 of my 7 teams.  I haven't bothered with Butler or Pargo from New Orleans though.  They have other qualities that bug me.

Boykins

Yeah, he's saved me in a couple leagues, too...I'm also very thankful for Matt Barnes.

injuries

They're killing me! You ended up being right about what you said at the start of the season when you said yao ming would go down. but i'm not sure you thought so many people would get hurt!
