For Love of Fantasy Hoops

Am I the only one who struggles with the emotions of being a fan and a fantasy basketball manager at the same time? Does anybody else have players on their fantasy teams they simply can't stand? Recently, I made a trade in one of my leagues based on my enjoyment of watching these players play in real life. In fantasy they are good, but normally I always try to get the better player in a trade. I am a huge fan of two-for-one or three-for-two trades that go in my favor. Basically, this allows me more room on my roster to play around with the waiver wire. However, this recent trade I made was a four-for-three deal in the other team's favor.

Going into this fantasy basketball year, I had an unprecedented number of players on my radar with top 50 ranked fantasy years behind them. I figure some of these players would be destined for a comeback, while others would retire into fantasy obscurity. For whatever reason, last year was the year of the injury bug in fantasy hoops. Most of these players are still in starting roles and should see 30+ minutes per game. I believe 30 minutes to be the magical number needed for fantasy relevance, as it's tougher to post significant stats in fewer minutes (though some players do).

The All Waiver Wire Team

I am signed up for my annual fantasy basketball league, and every year I wish their was more roster spots for waiver wire pick ups.  Every year, I study religously for my draft and come away with either high potential guys, or fantasy studs. If I'm lucky, I will end up with 1-2 players I can drop and play the waiver wire with.

Fantasy Players I Am Not Thankful For...

Hey everybody!  Sorry for taking so long to post, but I have been busy at work, like crazy busy, and haven't had time to post. I know you are all dying to read Rare Combinations Part 2 and I will get that finished as soon as possible.

Since Thanksgiving was just a few weeks ago, I feel it is time to discuss players I am not thankful for. So, here it goes...

Stephon Marbury - Many of you, including myself and many experts predicted that Marbury would return to his old self of averaging 20 points and 9 assists (career averages). Well ladies and gentlemen, I was wrong. I simply hate Marbury right now. He isn't even performing better than most players you can find hanging around your waiver wires for gosh sakes! However, I am not telling you to drop him. Instead I am telling you in all league formats to hold on to him. Why? Well, I hope and pray that somebody (Francis or Marbury) gets traded or just starts producing like they should. The problem with Marbury now is he needs the ball in his hands to do stuff, but with the Knicks the way they are, as soon as he passes the rock once, he never gets it back again. Isaiah is on thin ice in N.Y. and should start leaning on Marbury more. The potential here is too great so bench Marbury until he has 4-5 great games in a row.

Rare Combinations - Part One

Hello all! I am back for my weekly report on fantasy hoops. I tore it up on the basketball court the other day. I was draining 3’s from all over the place! Enough about me let’s get to the good stuff. This week will be part one of a two-part article.

Often in fantasy circles you will hear experts talk about the rare categories (blocks, steals, & assists). You might also hear experts mention what they look for in a F/C (blocks, rebounds, FG%) and point guards (steals, FT%, 3PTM, assists). How many players actually contribute in all of these categories with respect to their positions? Let’s examine this further.

Fantasy Studs...Lite

Well Fantasy Ballers, it is that time of the year again! In fact, I am so excited I am thinking about picking up one of those new balls - you know the super slick ones that Shaq and Cassell hate - and play some hoops on a nine-foot rim. Can you say monster dunks? Ok, enough about me and my obsession with basketball. Let’s get started.

It’s time to look at some fantasy studs…the Lite version. The early rounds of your fantasy draft tend to be easier than the later rounds. Perhaps there was a fantasy star you were eyeing who got taken before you pick. What do you do? Think of your situation as beer. When you’re young and skinny, you can go for the high carbs of Budweiser (or Coors, if you’re a Coors man/woman). After a while when your gut starts to hang over your belt, you begin to realize that it might be time to switch to the Bud Lite. Half the guilt, but all the production (alcohol) you need.
